Hurricane Milton lashed the western coast of Florida with 120-mile-per-hour winds upon making landfall on Wednesday evening just south of Sarasota. The storm, which formed only four days before landfall, became one of the most intense hurricanes on record in the Gulf of Mexico.
The storm whipped barrier islands that were still recovering from Hurricane Helene two weeks ago and left about 2.1 million customers were without power. At least 14 people died, mostly in the eastern part of the state.
