October marks Filipino American History Month (FAHM) in the United States, highlighting the first recorded arrival of Filipinos in the US on Oct. 18, 1587 at Morro Bay, California.  

During this month, various events and celebrations are held to commemorate the history and contributions of Filipino Americans.

Many of these events take place in California – home to 1.6 million Filipinos – featuring top musical artists, including Apl.de.ap, BGYO and 4th Impact.

Kicking off Filipino American History Month, this free event at City Hall welcomes families for a night of Filipino pride, offering complimentary refreshments (with registration) and parking. Attending this event is a great way to show solidarity with the Fil-Am community.

Discover the Culture of Filipino America – Oakland Style 2024

When: Oct.11, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Where: 1951 Telegraph Ave., Suite 4, Oakland, CA

Celebrating the arts during FAHM? Yes please! Immerse yourself in a vibrant showcase of art, poetry and culture at this pop-up exhibit. Hosted by Black-owned coffee shop Kinfolx, it’s the ideal setting to explore Filipino art and the intersection of cultures.

Teen Takeover

When: Oct.12, 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Where: Downtown Library, 1044 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA

Open to all teens and families, this event features traditional Filipino dance performances and a cooking show by Chef Andrew Arceo.

Filipino American International Book Festival 

When: Oct.12 -13, 2024 

Where: San Francisco Public Library, 100 Larkin Street, SF

Returning for its 7th year, the event welcomes attendees for a deep dive into Filipino American literature. With keynote speakers and panel discussions, this two-day festival is a nod to Fil-Am authors, including Elaine Castillo, author of “America Is Not the Heart.”

Filipino American History Month Celebration 2024

When: Oct. 10, 2024, 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Where: San Francisco City Hall Rotunda and North Light Court

This special celebration will honor the triumphs and resilience of Filipino Americans in the US with an impressive lineup of speakers, including community advocate Marjan Philhour, Warriors hype man Franco Finn and Philippine Consul General Neil Ferrer.

3rd Annual Watsonville Filipino American History Month Festival

When: Oct. 13 , 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Where: Watsonville City Plaza

Bring the whole family to this free festival showcasing cultural performances and food from local vendors. From community booths to fun activities for kids, this event has something for everyone.

Unveiling of the restored “Ang Lipi ni Lapu Lapu” mural

When: Oct. 13, 2024, 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Where: SOMA Pilipinas Cultural District, San Francisco

The Filipino Cultural Heritage District unveils the restoration of the first mural depicting the history of Filipino immigration to the Americas. 

You can also enjoy photo opportunities with the MAHAL Jeepney, community performances, inaugural 2024 Parol making workshop and a taste of Philippine ice cream flavors from the SOMA Pilipinas Sorbetes cart.

Celebrate Filipino culture in Southern California Pinoy Oktoberfeast

Where: 6400 East Pacific Highway, Long Beach

Hosted by The 714 Market, this event promises a day of cultural immersion with a pop-up market featuring the best local vendors and  Filipino food plus entertainment provided by the Long Beach Filipino Festival. Performers include an array of Fil-Am artists.
